The Admirals of Arlington High School showed few signs of fatigue or disappointment from a tough loss to Poughkeepsie less than 24 hours ago and rebounded to beat the Beacon Bulldogs 70-50 in a consolation match-up at Our Lady of Lourdes High School on Friday. Andrew Ziemens scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half for the Admirals. Meanwhile, Alex Smith and Tony Lee, who had 15 and 13 points, respectively, led Beacon.
Utilizing a similar game plan as the night before, Arlington was able to set a fast tempo in the first quarter by pushing the ball in transition off of Beacon misses to create some easy opportunities at the other end of the floor. In the half court, Arlington again used ball movement and reversals to create open jumpers for their guards. Beacon’s Smith kept the Bulldogs within striking distance as the buzzer concluded the first quarter with Arlington ahead 18-14. Arlington came out with an even more determined offensive presence in the second period behind their hot perimeter shooting to outscore Beacon 25-9 in the eight-minute span. Ziemens led the charge for the Admirals as he poured in 18 points in the first half. The Admirals extended the lead to 20 on a lay-up by Sam Loussedes off of an in-bound pass as the buzzer sounded.
The second half found both teams trading baskets and Beacon being no closer than a 20-point deficit. Arlington was still as tenacious as they had been throughout the game, especially attacking the offensive glass. The Admirals extended their lead to 26 midway through the fourth quarter on a rare four-point play completed by Vince Ross. Beacon’s full-court pressure proved to be too little, too late as they could only narrow the margin back to 20 by the conclusion of the fourth.
