In the first of a four game set at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, the Webutuck Warriors battled through a mediocre first quarter and relied upon some hot shooting from the perimeter to beat the Dover Dragons in a Small School Match-up, 70-47. Chris Matteo’s game-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers along with Alex Kravachuck’s 10 points led the way for the Warriors.  Mike Lloyd had 15 points to lead Dover.

Both teams started out in a sluggish manner during the opening period, as they each tried to establish their own offensive rhythm against zone defenses.  Webutuck’s full court pressure gave them a slight edge heading into the second quarter, despite Mike Lloyd’s 17-foot jump shot for Dover as time expired.  In the second quarter, Webutuck Coach Mike Riddle encouraged his team “to relax and start playing basketball.”  And they listened.  In the second quarter, the Warriors torched the nets and outscored the visiting Dragons 19-9.  Chris Matteo connected on three 3-pointers and Matt Kravachuck added another to extend the lead to 33-21 for the Warriors heading into the half.

Webutuck picked up where they left at the beginning of the third quarter by utilizing an inside-outside game on offense that Dover could not find an answer for.  Dover tried to double-down in the post against the 6’10” Alex Kravachuck, but the big man was able to find the open guards for jumpers from the perimeter.  Matteo again dialed in from long range with back-to-back three pointers to open up a 41-24 lead for the home team.  Heidt would continue to battle on the boards and in the paint for the Dragons, but to no avail.  Webutuck would hold on for the 70-47 victory, as they warmed up for their Small School Championship tilt with Our Lady of Lourdes tomorrow evening.
