What else would ten athletes and their parents rather being doing on the first summer-like weekend of the season? How about spending it inside watching basketball game after game? Well thats exactly what our 15u Edge team and their parents did this weekend as the Edge played six games in the King of the Mountain tournament hosted in Albany, New York.
On Saturday, the Edge played like Kings, taking all three games and first place in their pool. On Sunday, the Edge continued their quest winning both playoff games, sending them into the finals where a highly skilled team from Providence, Rhode Island defeated the Edge, taking home the championship trophy. The Edge, however, didn’t go down without a fight. Although down most of the game, they continued to play hard at the defensive end but couldn’t seem to find the basket at the other end. Grant Thomas’ consecutive 3’s cut the lead the to 9 with just under 8 minutes to play, but the that would be as close as they would come, eventually losing their final game of the weekend. ”We played good basketball all weekend,” said coach Krieger about his teams effort. ”Team Providence was very good, and we had a hard time keeping up with their speed.” With the defeat, the Edge finished up the weekend with a very impressive 5-1 record.
Up next is Hershey where all teams going will have the opportunity to play five games over the weekend. Preparation for that tournament will begin next week as all teams 11-15 are off this week due to graduation setup at the Poughkeepsie Day School.
In other action this weekend, the 11u won their first game of the season on Sunday (see coach’s comments in news and updates). Both the 12’s and 14’s split the weekend, going 2-2 while the 13u team finished the weekend with a win on Saturday night. The 16u team continues to impress with their defensive efforts, taking 3 of 4 games over two days. They will travel to Mahwah to compete in the pre-summer slam, their final tournament of the season.
Congratulations to the 15u team for their fine performance this weekend, to the 11u’s for their first win, and to the rest of teams that competed this past weekend!
